Greetings from rainy season with around 33 c (daytime) of Kano, Nigeria!

After I set off on the 8th Sept, I transited from AMS to Kano, and also stayed behind in AMS for few days to visit my friend whom I met in the missionary training college. It was a wonderful time for us to share how we've been doing since we left from the college so far. I'm amazed to get to know many of us have already gone out to the mission field; in Africa – Morocco, Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, Niger, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone…; in Asia – Afghanistan, India, Cambodia, Indonesia, mainland China…; and some other are in Europe – Norway, London, France…

God has been fulfilling His call on us through His grace and love for the unreached.

Thank God for bringing me safe to Kano on 11th Sept after a long trip (13 hrs to AMS, 9 hrs to Kano). After staying few days, I went down to Jos for orientation for a week more. It was very precious for me to meet those Nigeria friends, coworkers of the ministry as well as the SIM family again whom I met two years ago, and I wasn't able to see some of them right after the riot started on 9th 2001. They were all excited for my coming back as a long-term missionary.

I also managed to have ministry discussion with my supervisors in Jos. The overview of the ministry is to help coordinate all ministry and medical activities of Urban Ministries in the North. Duties include working with local Pastors, being involved in all medical outreaches, helping to train staff and volunteers medically and to do discipleship where desired and also to be involved in AIDS Awareness for the ministries in the North.

I experienced the power of the LORD with His words telling me that "I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength" Philip 4:13, it was truly encouraging.

However I have to learn Hausa as well as possible in order to be able to communicate with the local Hausa people. So I'm also doing a month long intensive Hausa course with few other new missionaries on the 11th Oct in Jos. Then I will have an ongoing part-time course by a local language helper in Kano.

At the moment, I'm busy in setting up my small apartment, trying to settle down the life and building up relationship with other missionaries, ECWA Church members and local people. And I also need to take time to have car practice, because driving is in American style in Nigeria. So buying a car is necessary for me as well as the ministry. If you would like to contribute for me in buying a car, you can donate into ministry fund through SIM. The budget is at least USD $4,000 for a second hand car. And there has already got about USD $2,000 from the commissioning service.

Prayer

* Please pray for my language study that God will graciously grant linguistic talent to me. It is not easy to learn it through my second language.

* Please pray for a good second hand car, for my driving skill and God's protection upon driving.

* Please pray for the smooth settling in to the life and culture.

* The population of Kano state as a whole was estimated at 10 milllion (Kano City alone was estimated at 3 million) based on 1991 population census. It is indeed a needy place, and there are only 5 families (one family is leaving this Dec.) and two single ladies (one is I, another one will be coming in Nov.) are serving as missionaries. Please pray God to have mercy upon this needy land and more workers will be willing to answer His call to build His kingdom in Kano!

* Pray for churches, family & friends to be supportive faithfully in prayers.

Praise

* Eventually I got back all my suitcases (one was sent by cargo and I had to pay total about USD$380).

*   God is so amazingly faithful, providing everything I need and more. Thank you so much for your prayers, letters, e-mails, and for the delightful surprise from Singapore – instant soup!

* The American family as my mentor, they've been wonderfully helping me in many different ways! And I even learned how to kill cockroaches from their children.

* Another single lady from Korea is coming in Nov, and she will be staying right next to me. She worked in Nigeria – Tofa for already two terms.

Postage: The local postal service has been improved recently. It is possible to receive letters and parcel (Pls contact SIM HK Office). However it may also be stolen if there is any valuable things.

Telephone: And I can also receive international phone call via NITEL (the local telephone line) in my apartment, providing when it is working. It sometimes goes off due to all sorts of reasons. I will let you know the tel. nos. once it's been installed.

E-mail: I can use Internet access via this NITEL as well.

May God bless you with his love and peace.

In Christ,

Serina Lee
