Dear brothers & sisters,

Bird Flu in Nigeria

There is outbreak of avian influenza in chicken farms in Nigeria, Kaduna has been confirmed according to WHO. It had been expected all along that the disease would reach Africa soon since there are many birds migrating from Europe every cold season. The price of chickens and eggs have been lowered half or below half price. Some Nigerians are much panicked whereas some others don’t care whether chickens are affected or not because it is the time now they can afford to eat. The poultry farms workers are suffering because those farms are their lives even though the government will compensate some little money for each sick and disposed chicken.

Life became boring to me because I can never trust the source of the chickens. So I am only eating beef and fish (no pork and now no chicken also).

Danish cartoon protest in Nigeria

There were demonstrations yet against the Danish caricatures, including one showing Prophet Mohammad covering a bomb-shaped turban with an ignited fuse, which many Muslims regards as blasphemous.

When the demonstrations were going on in Egypt and some other countries, I also knew that it will soon reach to this land. Last Saturday they went on the rampage, burning shops and churches of Christians in Borno State (Northern Nigeria). Some were even killed in Churches. Police said thousands of rioters burned at least 11 Churches in Maiduguri (city of Borno State); 15 churches were torched by angry Muslims.

Federal president had already warned the Kano State governor not to have any riot since after last rampage 2004. We continue to pray that God will bring peace to Kano and elsewhere of Nigeria.

bulletVillage Outreach ~

In Jan we, our team together with a big visiting team from America, went to one village for medical outreach and Jesus film show. Praise the Lord that there were more than 200 people helped medically and 53 people converted. We pray that the village pastor will work hard for the follow up and these converts will grow spiritually.

bulletNew Ministry Coordinator ~

As I mentioned on last newsletter that the local pastor (who works as ministry coordinator and my co-worker) had been disobedient and discovered misusing the ministry money. And the new coordinator has now just come to continue the ministry and work with me together. We pray that God will enable him to do the work and be encouraged to reach out his own people.

HIV/AIDS Ministry

In Nigeria 1 out of every 10 young people in the 20-24 age group has the AIDS virus and almost 6 out of every 100 of the adult population is already carrying the AIDS virus.

I am starting a VCT (voluntary counseling and testing) program instead of PMTCT mentioned on last newsletter due to lack of resources. People can voluntarily choose to come for counseling and testing to find out if they are infected with HIV. Pre and post test counseling will be given in order to bring awareness of AIDS and follow-up action plan.

Pray that God will enable me to train up some locals for this ministry.

Serving in mission together

Praise And Prayer

1.      Thank God for bringing a team of 21 from America for the village outreach and 53 converts!

Pray that those had come will continue praying and supporting the needs of Kano, and that their view of mission has also been encouraged. The village pastor will continue to discipline their spiritual needs.

2.      Thank God for the new coordinator- Pastor Timothy, joining the house of hope ministry.

And pray that God will strengthen and encourage him this ministry in reaching out lots of destitute.

3.      Thank God for starting the VCT HIV/AIDS program.

Pray that God will enable me in conducting trainings for volunteers, room renovation and leading the whole program in a way that people are benefited and His name be glorified.

4.      Pray for my father’s health, his diagnosis is Parkinson’s disease with dementia. Pray that he will be prescribed suitable medicine in the coming appointment (end of Feb) and he can tolerate well and so that he can be stabilized. Also pray that God will take away the lots of stress from my mother and brother.

5.      Due to my father’s situation, the field and EA office have both agreed on shortening my first term into 3 years and 3 months. So my term will be ending this Dec 2006 and there will be 10 months home assignment.

Pray that God will continue to allow me to serve him for the remaining 9 months on this first term and be leading me into a new stage of my first furlough back home as we are still serving together in mission.

6.      Pray for my on-going language study and protection in driving in such chaotic place.

7.      Pray for security and health for the entire country of Nigeria.
