An African proverb in English; “No matter how long a log stays in the water, it doesn't become a crocodile.”

A warm greeting to everybody in this ever changing world. Since I came back ‘home’ in HK, I have experienced unfamiliar weather, expected busy life and a frequent comment. First is the warmest Chinese New Year-19c, second is incredible cold suddenly in March. I don’t know what to wear and what I should put on for my dad and in fact he complained of cold when I did not put enough for him. And the frequent comment I received is ‘Ah? You are still so white (fair)’!

Come on! I will not become African though I stayed there for 3 more years.

Dad’s health –

He is suffering of dementia (middle stage) with Parkinson’s disease and other medical problems. It is easily energy-drained and stressed to look after him and my mom is obviously suffering of emotional tiredness. Since Feb my dad had been successfully taken to elderly day centre (Mon-Sat), it brought us relief to some extent. Nevertheless my dad’s confusion particular in recognition and understanding seems getting worse and lack of cooperation with us. As a family we also made a major decision to arrange him for elderly home. However we have to wait for about 3 years because we can not afford the private one and their quality is not better than the one in Government. There are incredible rising needs of elderly but the resources are scarce in HK.

Mum’s experience –

On the third day afternoon of Chinese New Year, my mum was eating and watching TV. Suddenly the food she swallowed was stuck in her oesophagus and even making her could not breathe or talk. Fortunately I was together with her and called ambulance to send her to ER. Later on after about total 20-30 mins, the food went down by itself. And she admitted for 1 night and was arranged for endoscope.

God also answered our prayers, by His grace, the process was smooth and the result was no tumour or ulcer but gastritis. She needs to aware of her eating habit and ‘slow down’. She is too important to the family since I’m gone, especially in taking care of dad and the entire ‘house’.

Study –

It is a graciously answered prayer! Since end of Jan I started a master program with University of New Castle. There are courses on Nursing as well as Management and I’m enjoying a lot especially I can often use the experience in Nigeria as scenario for group discussion and case study which is very relevant and giving me lots of reflection and learning. I pray that I can use the knowledge in the future.

Churches Speaking –

It is a privilege for missionary to share her vision, mission work and needs among the supporting churches. I get encouraged and refreshed about the ministry and mission needs of Nigeria each time.

“No matter how long a log stays in the water, it doesn't become a crocodile.”

A log can stay in the river for a long time, but it will not become a fish or a crocodile. A black person, even if he spends his entire life around white people, doesn't change colour. Notwithstanding, in certain ways we are called to change our lives. Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3).

Every time I share about the people, the places, the ministries of Nigeria…I pray that God will truly transform our hearts and bring conversion to our Christian lives so that many more people will say ‘yes’ to His calling.

Prayer Requests:

1)      Pray for my on-going study that God will give me wisdom and knowledge in learning, writings and exam; and supply the financial need for the fee.

2)      Pray for peaceful travel for my mum to Shanghai (her home town) for about a month (April), and that she may have great time visiting her own family.

3)      Pray for my strength and patience as I will be the only person taking care of my dad when my mum is gone for a month.

4)      Pray for my on-going speaks in Churches and God is at work in people’s hearts!

In Him,

Serina Lee
